The ranges at a glance
The figures vary widely because “website” can mean many things: a business card site you put together yourself, or a site with positioning, copy and imagery of its own.
| Route | One-off | Running | Typical for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website builder such as Wix, Jimdo or Squarespace | hardly any cost, but your time | CHF 15 to 40 per month | a first business card site |
| Freelancer | CHF 1,000 to 6,000 | under CHF 100 to around 6,000 per year, depending on technology and support | small companies with a clear brief |
| Agency, SME website | CHF 1,500 to 15,000, depending on the source | under CHF 100 to around 6,000 per year, depending on technology and support | SMEs with several services |
| Larger or multilingual site | CHF 5,000 to 35,000, depending on the source | depending on scope | several languages, locations or features |
| Moontech Labs, premium website | from CHF 6,000, fixed price | from CHF 249 per month | owner-led companies that want a clear position |
What determines the price
Six points account for most of the difference.
- Scope
- How many pages and services. A business card site is built faster than ten pages with a sub-page per offer.
- Copy
- Do you write it yourself or does the provider? Good copy is often the biggest item missing from cheap quotes.
- Images
- Stock photos, your own photos or imagery of your own.
- Languages
- Every language means translating, checking and maintaining.
- Features
- Booking, a shop or a customer area cost considerably more than a contact form. For shops the sources state CHF 5,000 to over 80,000.
- Technology
- A content management system such as WordPress needs ongoing updates. Lean static sites cost considerably less to run.
Running costs and hourly rates
The domain costs around CHF 10 to 25 per year, simple hosting CHF 120 to 300. For maintenance and updates, providers state CHF 30 to 150 per month. For WordPress maintained by an agency the figures are CHF 1,700 to 6,000 per year, considerably lower for lean static sites, in the simplest case just the domain.
For hourly rates the sources state CHF 80 to 250 for freelancers and CHF 140 to 250 and more for agencies.
Where Moontech Labs stands
We are not the cheapest option, and we say so openly. A premium website with us costs from CHF 6,000 excl. VAT at a fixed price that is set before we build. It includes positioning, copy, imagery of its own, design, technology and legal pages, live in two to four weeks.
Website care costs from CHF 249 per month, with up to three hours of changes and a quarterly check. More about the premium website
Five questions before you commission a website
Whoever you choose, you should have these answers in writing.
- Who owns the domain and the files? You should own both, even if you switch providers.
- Is the price fixed?A fixed price before the build protects you from extra charges. Ask what falls outside the scope.
- Who writes the copy?If you write it yourself, the site costs less, but it costs your time.
- What does running the site cost after the first year? Some offers are cheap in the first year and more expensive afterwards.
- How do you get out again?Switching should be possible without a rebuild. With website builders it usually isn't.
Sources
The figures are the providers' own, not our own measurement. All four sources are web agencies that sell websites themselves. We found no current independent survey; a 2016 report by SRF Kassensturz only covers domain and hosting. Where a source leaves a range open at the top, the chart shows the stated value.

Discovery callHow much does a simple website cost in Switzerland?
A one-page business card site costs CHF 500 to 3,000 according to the sources. With a website builder you pay CHF 15 to 40 per month and do the work yourself.
Why are agencies more expensive than freelancers?
Agencies often deliver more trades from a single source, such as concept, copy, design and technology, and tend to sit at the upper end of hourly rates. What matters is what the price includes.
How much does a website cost per year?
From under CHF 100 for a lean site to around CHF 6,000 for WordPress maintained by an agency. The biggest differences come from the technology and how much support you need.
Is an expensive website worth it?
If it brings inquiries you would otherwise miss. For businesses with orders worth several thousand francs, a website often pays for itself with just a few additional orders.
